Scansano

Scansano is a municipality with 4530 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers about 274 km ². It lies about 25 km east of Grosseto and 140 km south of Florence in the vineyards of Morellino di Scansano and in the climatic classification of Italian communities in Zone E, ​​2216 GG. In the municipality the rivers Albegna flow ( south ), and Ombrone Trasubbie (both in the northern municipality ).

The districts include Baccinello, Montorgiali, Murci, Pancole, Poggio Ferro, Polveraia, Pomonte and Preselle. In the main town of a population of about 1400 inhabitants, the most densely populated districts are Baccinello and Pancole, each with approximately 300 inhabitants. The highest hamlet is Murci with 595 meters of altitude.

The neighboring municipalities are Campagnatico, Grosseto, Magliano in Toscana, Manciano and Roccalbegna.

History

Documented are the districts Murci ( 918) and Montorgiali ( 1188 by Pope Clement III. , Former capital of the county) prior to today's main town of Scansano, which is only mentioned in writing in 1272. Scansano ( no longer Castello, available today ) was built as a castle on a hill between the Ombrone Valley and the Albegna Valley in the Middle Ages. By the end of the 13th century the place was under the control of Aldobrandeschi from Santa Fiora. From 1418 the town was under the Counts of Santa Fiora, Bosio Sforza, of the place in 1615 sold to Cosimo II de ' Medici and was incorporated by him in the duchy of Tuscany. 1783 reached the districts (except Murci and Pereta ) due to a territorial reform of the Maremma to Scansano. Under Leopold II of the site that was used in the summer as the seat of the provincial government, as Grosseto due to the geographical situation had problems with malaria. Economic boom succeeded to the place from 1816, when the production of sulfur was started. In 1861 the town had 4350 inhabitants, which until 1951 almost doubled, but then fell back to the level from 1861 to the present day.

  • Convento del Petreto, monastery north of the main town, which dates back to Bernardine of Siena. In 1702 a Franciscan monastery. After various changes of ownership, the building has since the beginning of the 20th century in the hands of the Franciscans.
  • Teatro Castagnoli, 1852-1892 built theater in the town center.
