Scarborough and Whitby Railway

The railway Scarborough Whitby was a railway line, which resulted in the English county of North Yorkshire along the North Sea coast from Scarborough to Whitby.

The line was shut down in 1965 due to cost-cutting plans of British Rail (see Beeching Axe ). The roadbed was converted to a railway line bike path, which now forms part of Route 1 of the National Cycle Network and the Moor to Sea Cycle Route.

The owners of the nearby North Yorkshire Moors Railway had originally planned to purchase the rail line, but this failed due to high costs, so they opted for the other track.

At the Yorkshire coast there is still the hope that the distance from Scarborough to Whitby one day be re-opened as a museum railway parallel to a bike path.
