Scarlino

Scarlino is a municipality with 3808 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in southern Tuscany, Italy. The medieval town in the province of Grosseto is located on a hill overlooking the plain of the Maremma and the river Pecora.

History

The area around Scarlino was inhabited in Roman times. A port called Scabris Portus is documented in the vicinity of present-day hamlet of Il Puntone. The Roman life was rather in the plane from as on the hills. The first written mention of the current core location dates back to 973 and renames the feudal lords Lamberto di Ildebrando Aldobrandeschi. The fortification with castle ( Rocca ), within which the place grew, is first documented in the year 1108, as the rule of the Aldobrandeschi was shared with the Bishop of Roselle.

After changing ownership Scarlino fell in 1278 to Pisa and then shared the fate of the republic: in 1406 conquered by Florence in 1569 incorporation into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, in 1737 the Habsburgs and from 1860 to the Italian nation-state belonging. Some landlords and merchant families Scarlinos had early voted for the republic.

In the era of fascism, the resistance of the liberal-minded bourgeois property was fierce.

Since May 22, 1960 Scarlino is a separate municipality ( comune ) ..

Local structure

In addition to the nucleus ( capoluogo ) belong to the municipality the following districts ( frazioni ):

  • Scarlino Scalo is located on the historic Via Aurelia.
  • Il Puntone is a port on the Tyrrhenian Sea

Neighboring municipalities are Follonica, Gavorrano, Massa Marittima and Castiglione.

Landmarks / Points of tourism

The nucleus Scarlino has retained the character of a medieval borgo. The highest point is the castle of Aldobrandeschi, are obtained from the defensive wall, Palas and corner towers. Weather permitting, a wide panoramic view offers the bay of Follonica, the island of Elba and Corsica behind.

The central square of the village is named after Giuseppe Garibaldi, a monument is set. From there, run up steep streets to the fort. The center has little traffic (parking below the city walls).

The place is frequented by day-trippers, but for lack of a permanent stay accommodation is not provided.

The coastal district of Il Puntone with harbor and sandy beaches, however, is popular with swimmers, surfers, sailors and divers.

Local hard

Every year on 19 August, 1970, the Carriere del 19 instead, a competition between the three local districts ( contrade ) Donato, Rocca and Centro. After a parade and presentation of flag wavers, the representatives of the three districts a historical scene ( a Korsarenangriffs defense of the fortress ) must enact in medieval costumes. The winner is determined by a jury.

Originally August 19 was a day of remembrance for the liberation of the town of a cholera epidemic in 1855.
