Schalke (Harz)

Geographical location

The Schalke lies in the Upper Harz within the Harz Nature Park. It is located approximately 7 km south-southwest of Goslar's Old Town and 5 km northeast of Zellerfeld, the northern district of Clausthal- Zellerfeld, on the border of the Goslar urban area to south in the unincorporated area of ​​resin. About 4 km south-east lies Schulenberg and 3 km (as the crow flies) west-northwest of Clausthal. On the northeast flank springs the Abzucht and slightly northeast from the summit of the small Schalke, a tributary of the Okerstausees.

Schalke listening post

Since 1959 was during the Cold War near the summit of Schalke listening post, a site of the French Air and signal intelligence, which was expanded in 1968 to a 64 m high reinforced concrete tower. This vacant since 1993 tower was demolished on 2002 and the entire system removed until 2003. Other listening posts were in the resin on the Worm Mountain and the Stöberhai. Still available are the towers on the mountain and the Ravens located near the Schalke Bockberg.

Schalke's lookout tower

Schalke's observation tower, which was built by the then resin club Zweigverein Zellerfeld 1892 and restored in 1992 by the Harz Club Zweigverein Clausthal- Zellerfeld, is the oldest of four steel lookout towers of the resin in the resin clubs. He is about 10.5 m high and about 3.5 tons. From 1968 to 2002, the tower stood about 50 m southeast of the listening post, but it was after the demolition of the same on 23 September 2002 at his old place about 100 m south-southwest of the summit recessed. However, he granted only a good view to the east and south. The view is to the Brocken, worm mountain ridge on the field with the Hanskühnenburg and up to Clausthal -Zellerfeld. Next to the tower is a refuge of the Harz Club.

Transport and Hiking

From the restaurant grouse on the main road 241 performs up to 12 percent steep, closed to public motor vehicle traffic road up to Schalke, whose Blacktop is located in parts in bad condition.

Up to Schalke, longer trails from Zellerfeld, Goslar and Oker and a short, steep trail from middle school mountain past the Lower Schalke pond and Festenburg, two districts of Schulenberg. Schalke's observation tower is included as No. 125 ( Schalke tower) in the system of stamp locations of the Harz hiking pin; the stamp box depends on the standing next to the tower refuge Pötzschner Hut.
