Schalun Castle

The ruin Schalun (also called Wild Castle ) is a ruined hill fort in the municipality of Vaduz, the capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein.

Location

The ruin Schalun is situated on a rocky terrace approximately one kilometer northeast and nearly 400 feet above the center of Vaduz. The small, almost treeless plain is bounded by steep mountain slopes from the Rhine valley to the west and to the east rises the Rätikon the Central Alps.

History

The first phase of the castle dates back to the late 12th century at the latest. The name Schalun is here first mentioned in 1237 in a donation. In the 13th century, the plant was expanded and provided with stronger masonry and additional buildings. Because only sparse finds is now assumed that the castle was abandoned in later times and was subsequently burned down. In the 18th century the ruins came into the possession of the Prince and eventually became the town of Vaduz passed. After about 50 years of privately owned the castle since the year 1933 in the possession of the Commune of Vaduz.

Conservation status

Today, much of the Kernbauten the castle have been preserved: The Palas partially owns more than two meters thick and up to ten meters high building remains. Due to the negative of the wooden beams can be detected at these locations at least two bullets. From the donjon the south and west wall are obtained, the south wall with up to three meters high wall remains is much better preserved.
