Castle Scharfstein

The sharp stone castle sits on an elongated mountain ridge above the village Scharfstein, a district of Drebach in the Ore Mountains in Saxony. The castle is one of 24 objects of state enterprise State Palaces, Castles and Gardens of Saxony.

History

The original structure was built in 1250. As the client is suspected of Waldenburg, however, as secured only applies to the first owner. The von Waldburg possessed with in their possession dominions Waldenburg, Rabenstein, Scharfstein and Selva have a contiguous area that extended from the middle splices up to Erzgebirgskamm. 9 villages were the lords of the castle tributaries, including Grießbach, Großolbersdorf, Drebach and Herold. When the castle Greifenstein was destroyed in the 15th century, Scharfstein also took over the patronage of Thum, Ehrenfriedersdorf and Geyer. This increased its value such that the Elector in 1439 brought the area of ​​him heavily indebted Waldburger itself. On January 26, 1492 bought Heinrich von Einsiedel the sharp stone castle and the associated villages Grießbach, Großolbersdorf, Grunau, scorn village, Hopfgarten and Scharfstein. Until 1931, she remained in the possession of the family.

A fire on the night of June 1 and 2 in 1921, total residential wing and part of the society wing were destroyed. Based on the old figure was from 1921 to 1923 the partial reconstruction after plans by Bodo Ebhardt.

1931 acquires factory owner Captain Eulitz from Fährbrücke possession. Through his work was in 1932 a bird observatory. Hundreds nest boxes were hung in the possession belonging to the 325 acres of woodland, performed ringed and published scientific reports, with the support of the Chemnitz Ornithological Society. In 1945 this forest area into public ownership, the castle was first mountain school of bismuth and 1951 established a special children's home for wayward boys. In 1967 it was converted into a Jugendwerkhof for maladjusted adolescents. The Ornithological work was undertaken by the museum at Schloss Burg Augustus.

In 1993 the castle was by the Free State of Saxony - Saxony taken Schlösserverwaltung. In the following period, the castle was renovated and converted landmark status to the museum. With the completion of the renovation work in 1995 various exhibitions were opened - the first time since 1945, the castle is again open to the public. The keep is now used as a lookout.
