Scheemda

Scheemda ( listen? / I ) is a district of the municipality in the Dutch province of Groningen Oldambt. It has about 14,100 inhabitants ² in an area of ​​approximately 120 km. Until the merger with the Winschoten and Reider country to Common Oldambt on 1 January 2010 Scheemda formed a separate municipality.

Incorporations

Previously, the community Scheemda was smaller, almost as big as Winschoten, but in 1990 Midwolda and Nieuwolda were merged with Scheemda.

Location and economic

Location and connections

The town is located east of the city of Groningen, between Menterwolde and Reider country. He is of the railway line empty Groningen and the A7 motorway (both: Groningen Winschoten - Leer ( Ostfriesland) ) intersected. The village has a small Scheemda station on the railway line. The channel Winschoterdiep allows IWT to proceed to the small port of Scheemda. Still other channels traverse the former municipality, but these are only passable for canoes, small boats, etc.. The water sports tourists sake numerous small campsites were created in recent decades.

Economy

The industry in which ( because of the location and convenient access to appropriate ) former town was formerly synonymous (cardboard, church bells, shipbuilding). Today, there are only small businesses. It tries to attract new business by advertising campaigns. Main sources of income Scheemdaer economy are currently agriculture and tourism. Also, there are now facilities for commuters from elsewhere ( see below).

Blue City

( Dutch: De Blauwe Stad ) 2005, the construction of the so-called Blue City was started. Here you build villas around an artificial lake. So you try to make the environment inviting for rich people from other parts of the Netherlands. On 12 May 2005, Queen Beatrix opened the water supply. In spring 2007 the first houses were completed around the artificial lake and covered by the residents. The project also has some opponents. Above all, the local Communist Party ( VCP, Unified Communist Party) has made many attempts to block the project.

History and Museums

Between about 1240 and the devastating fire in 1624 was a monastery of the Order of Premonstratensian at Heiligerlee. All the villages of the former municipality had to suffer in the late Middle Ages by floods of Dollard; many places had south to 1500 of the original position to be rebuilt. In 1536, the First Battle of Heiligerlee took place; thereby defeated troops of Emperor Charles V. the duchy of Guelders. Of greater importance was the Second Battle of Heiligerlee. On May 23, 1568 troops attacked the rebellious Dutch, the Spaniards successfully. That was the beginning of the Eighty Years' War. A monument to the fallen in the battle Count Adolf, and a small museum in the village Heiligerlee keep the memory of this important battle alive. In the 17th century Nieuwolda had the nickname golden Hamrik. Golden, for the richness of the large farmers; Hamrik ( Ostfriesisch: Hamm Rich) is: mean low-lying, sometimes flooded meadow. In this community was, as elsewhere in the province of Groningen, the difference between the rich peasants and poor workers great, and produced a deep social divide. Several wealthy farm houses have been preserved. In one of them in Nieuwolda there is a collection of strollers that can be visited. In the period 1850-1980, there were some significant industrial enterprises, especially the straw board mill in Scheemda and the bell foundry in Heiligerlee. The latter was partly preserved as a museum.
