Scheibenberg (Ore Mountains)

Basalt columns ( " organ pipes ") on the disc mountain

The disc mountain is a mountain in the Erzgebirge (Saxony ) with 807 m height above sea level. It is situated immediately southeast of the city of the same name Scheibenbergstraße.

The disc mountain is a selected site for the intended candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage mining region Erzgebirge.

Geology

As erosion remnant of a tertiary lava flow it is like its neighbors Baerenstein and Pöhlberg mostly of basalt. According to modern petrologic classification, however, the " basalt " of the disc mountain needs to be addressed as pyroxene - nephelinite. This is on the disc mountain in the form of particularly impressive, up to 30 m high columns ( in the vernacular: " organ pipes " ) to. All three mountains serve as an example for the relief inversion. It spilled originally lava into a lower section of the terrain and cooled there. Over time, the surrounding rock eroded quicker than the harder basalt, so that today extends the former valley of the surrounding terrain.

1787/88 led to the mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner investigations on disc mountain. He found that the basalt lay on layers of Verwitterungsgrus, sand, clay and weathered basalt ( Wacker stone). This Werner concluded the marine origin of the rock and founded the geological doctrine of Neptunism. He assumed that all minerals formed as sedimentary rocks from the water of the oceans.

Below the " organ pipes " informed a basalt - trail based on 15 Charts on the peculiarities of the natural monument Scheibenbergstraße. The mountain was awarded in May 2006 by the Academy of Earth Sciences to Hannover eV ( AGH ) as one of the 77 most important national geological sites in Germany.

Flora and Fauna

Among the representatives of the animal world on the disc mountain among others include the kestrel, the sand lizard and the stone marten. The flora is that of a typical mixed forest with spruce stands. To find include silk Elba starting, Baneberry, Bingel herbs, Foxglove, the Toadflax True, the forest - wood rush and tansy.

Routes to the summit

From the city Scheibenbergstraße is a passable mountain road up to the mountain inn. In the middle range of the lower mountain tour takes you around the mountain. From this path branch off several peaks paths where the location on the southeastern slope Tame climbing is the most famous. It was pioneered in the early 1930s from the disc Berger citizens Ottomar Tame in laborious and disinterested crafted with over 300 levels by an out of the way basalt block field.

Observation tower

1891 was built at the summit of the mountain a disc erected from basalt and brick observation tower. The 26 m high tower, the observation deck was located in almost 21 m in height, was named after the Saxon Queen Carola ( 1833-1907 ). Because of disrepair the tower had to be demolished in 1971. 1993/94 a 29 m high building, which is modeled on the striking basalt columns of the mountain in its octagonal shape was formed. From the observation platform located in 22 meters height lends itself in good conditions with a wide and comprehensive panorama.

Mountain inn

During the construction of Carola tower opened in 1892 and a first mountain inn. The initially modest building was rebuilt several times in the following decades and expanded. The present building was built in 1992/93 as part of a comprehensive modernization.
