Scheldt–Rhine Canal

The Scheldt - Rhine Canal is 35 kilometers long, running from Antwerp to Volkerak and is part of the Scheldt -Rhine connection. This connects Antwerp with all the rivers of the Rhine- Meuse delta. The total length is approximately 50 kilometers.

The canal begins in Antwerp and crosses South Beveland near the border with North Brabant. On the north side of South Beveland of Antwerp part of the channel ends in the Zealand Reimerswaal community on the Kreekrakschleusenkomplex with two locks, each 310 meters long and 24 meters wide. This also still have a middle gate. In this locks the salt water is separated from fresh water, since the part lying behind the lock performs freshwater area. The opening of the Main -Danube Canal on 25 September 1992, the port of Antwerp on the Scheldt - Rhine Canal is directly connected to the Black Sea.

Then, the channel crosses between the Oesterdam and Markiezaatskade the zoom sea. The Port of Bergen op Zoom can be reached by a short branch canal through a lock. Next, the channel leads through the former Eendracht ( fairway ) between the island of Tholen and the mainland of North Brabant Sint- on to Philips country over the Volkerak. About the Volkerak locks and Dordtsche Kil you reach Rotterdam, on the Nieuwe Merwede the Waal.

The channel is tidefrei of Kreekrak to the three Volkerakschleusen. Previously they had plans to continue the channel on the Belgian side in the direction of De Kempen, but this was abandoned because of numerous protests.

The locks are 326.5 meters long and 24 meters wide, the channel is navigable for pushing units with four barges. Besides the three main gates, there is a lock for the recreational boating.
