The Schelenburg

The Schelenburg in Schledehausen is a moated castle and one of the oldest castles in the Osnabrück / Lower Saxony.

History

The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1160, but is estimated to be the 11th century. Its oldest part is the Gothic residential tower. He has a wall thickness of 2.5 meters and stands on oak piles. In the Middle Ages it was completely surrounded by water and could only be reached by a ladder to the first floor. The former multiple staggered grave system to the castle is preserved partially even today.

The castle was by the end of the 14th century, the ancestral home of the noble lords of Sledesen. In 1396 the castle became the property of the family von Schele after Rabodo Schele married the heiress Elizabeth of Sledesen. Since then, the castle remained in the family, the forest ownership is now administered by Joachim Kellermann Schele.

1490 a fire destroyed a residential and commercial buildings, the massive residential tower was spared. From about 1500 to 1532 was built on the foundations of the burned apartment building in a Renaissance broken sandstone. The renowned South German architect Jörg Unkair completed the construction in the Weser Renaissance style.

Since the mid- 1980s, the castle was thoroughly renovated and received, among other things, a new roof. In the old castle kitchen is now home to the main room of a catering operation. The restaurant is located in a vaulted ceiling. On the outside, the terrace adjoins the castle moat. Inside is another guest room with barrel vault the transition to the Gothic part of the palace. A room on the top floor of the Gothic tower is available for events. Below is a space for weddings by the Registry Office bite village.

The moated castle is a tourist attraction of the village and municipality bite their hamlet Schledehausen ( after the noble family Sledesen named). It is located about 12 kilometers east of Osnabrück between Wiehengebirge and the Teutoburg Forest in the county road 324 ( Osning route ) just before the western entrance of Schledehausen.

Community

Schelenburg existed as a community to integrate into the community bite village, which became effective on 1 July 1972.
