The Schemmerbach rises in the southwest part of the Werra -Meißner -Kreis in Stölzinger Mountains. Its source is located southwest of Stölzingen, an estate in the south-western area of forest Kappel. Around 1 km west of the summit Stölzinger ( 473.9 m above sea level. NHN ) they entfließt near the state road 3226 a small pond at about 387 m altitude.

Initially, the entirely along the L 3226 running in natural environment Schemmerbachgrund Schemmerbach flows north-north- eastward to Gehau, a southeastern suburb of Forest Kappel. After flowing through the village, the river runs, still in the forest Kappeler area, north to Schemmern from where on it northeastward flows Burghofen.
