Schenkon

Schenkon is a municipality in the constituency Sursee the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland.

Geography

The community, which is called in the local dialect tavern, located at the northeastern end of Lake Sempach east of Sursee. The village and the hamlets of abominations and cell field in the northwest are grown together. Set on the hillside on the road Sursee - Beromunster 1 km north of the village by a building boom of the district Tannberg (590 m asl) is created. To the east lies the hamlet of Tann ( 663 m asl ). The hamlet Zopfenberg (621 m asl ) is 2.5 km north of the village and the farthest hamlet Zollhus (505 m above sea level, 2.8 km northwest of the village ) in the plane between Sursee and Geuensee at customs Bach.

Schenkon borders Eich, Geuensee, Beromunster and Sursee.

Population

The population is due to migration to the industrial centers in the second half of the 19th century sharply ( from 1850 to 1900: -14.8 %). After a stationary phase it rises from 1930 to 1960 considerably ( from 1930 to 1960: 30.8 %). The 1960s bring a decline in population. Since 1970, the number of residents has more than tripled (due to scenic location, highway construction, low taxes, 1970-2004: 243.9 ).

Languages

The population used as everyday language, a high- Alemannic dialect. At the last census in 2000 gave 96.44 % German, 0.62 % Italian, and 0.38% Serbo-Croatian as the main language.

Religions - faiths

In earlier times the entire population of the Roman Catholic Church was a member. Today ( as of 2000), there are 80.94 % and 10.93% Roman Catholic Evangelical Protestant Christians. In addition, one finds 4.61% and 0.38 % non-religious Muslims.

Origin - Nationality

Of the 2,488 inhabitants end of 2006, 2'397 Swiss and 91 (3.7% ) are foreigners. At the last census was 92.25 % ( 95.29 % including dual citizens ) Swiss nationals. The largest immigrant groups come from Italy, Germany, Serbia - Montenegro ( mostly Albanians ), Croatia and the Netherlands.

Traffic

The community is connected through the postal bus Sursee - Schenkon - Sempach-Station and the bus Sursee - Schenkon - Beromunster grid of public transport. Both Sursee as Sempach-Station are stops on the railway Olten- Lucerne.

The village lies on the main road Schenkon 2 Sursee - Sempach. The district cell field as well - and in addition to the main road 23 Sursee - Beromunster. The nearest motorway junction Sursee on the A2 is only 2 km away.

History

Lake Sempach remains of pile dwellings have been found from prehistoric times. Prove the remains of a Roman villa and Alemanni graves that Schenkon was inhabited in early historic times. First mentioned by name takes the place as Scenchofen in a certificate of ownership of the Emperor Frederick I. against the Canons Beromunster in 1173rd Later it belonged to the possessions of the Habsburgs and became a part of the Michel Office. The Lords of Schenkon exercised dominion for the Habsburgs. In 1415 the city of Lucerne conquered the Michelsamt. Until 1798 the city remained a part of the bailiwick Michelsamt. Then it belonged until 1803 to the District Sursee and since then the newly created Office Sursee.

Ruin Schenkon

In the municipality is the castle site of the former castle Schenkon. This was first mentioned in 1203, in 1302 then explicitly related to the Lords of Schenkon. Perhaps already destroyed in the Battle of Sempach, the ruin was released in 1736 from the city of Lucerne Council to demolish and served to rebuild the city two years ago spent Sempach. 1899 took place in archaeological excavations, but then at that time still an impressive ruin was again used as a quarry. Today, only a few, in 1992 secured remains reminiscent of the former castle.
