Schiedeella

Schiedeella is a genus of the orchid family ( Orchidaceae). It contains 23 species that are mainly distributed in Central America.

Description

The Schiedeella species are slender, herbaceous plants growing terrestrial or occasionally epiphytic. The roots are fleshy, spindle-shaped to bulbous and hairy. One or more basal leaves form a rosette, flowering time, they are often already wilted. The leaves are distinctly petiolate, the petiole includes the shoot. The leaf blade is oval, the leaf surface is green, tinged with bluish or reddish in some species.

The racemose, einseitswendige in some species inflorescence is sometimes hairy at the top. He is partially enveloped by tubular to lanceolate bracts. The glabrous bracts are colored oval to lanceolate, green, greenish-white or reddish. The ovary is cylindrical to fusiform, slightly twisted, he has obliquely upward. The sometimes fragrant flowers are white, pink or reddish. The flowers are tubular, they are horizontal or facing up. The sepals are equal to each other, they are approximately bell-shaped one against the other, the tips bent slightly outward. The dorsal sepal is concave and grown for a piece of the column. The lateral sepals set with slate base of the pedestal. The narrow petals are the dorsal sepal and stick with their inner edges there on, their tops are free. The lip at its base for a short distance narrowed ( " nailed " ), then heart-shaped to arrow-shaped widened with two lateral nectaries. The lamina of the lip is fleshy, covered with longitudinal bars and often with hair. The slender, slightly curved column is club-shaped, at the base of them joint with the ovary reaching out ( pedestal ). In hand, it is hairy. The scar is round. The stamen is oval to heart-shaped, pointed toe. It includes the club-shaped, yellow pollinia, which in a joint, tongue-shaped viscid disc ( Viscidium ) depend. The separation layers between stamen and stigma ( rostellum ) is triangular and ends pointed. The capsule fruit is oval.

Occurrence

Schiedeella occurs mainly in Central America. In the north reaches Schiedeella arizonica nor the U.S. states of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. In the south, the area is sufficient to Panama, Cuba and Hispaniola also be populated. The species occur in higher altitudes 700-3200 m. They grow in montane forests, thickets and in open, rocky places. They are usually found in humus-rich soils, some species can also grow in epiphytic humus pockets or cushions of moss.

Systematics and botanical history

Schiedeella is classified within the tribe Cranichideae in the subtribe Spiranthinae. The genus was described in 1920 by Rudolf Schlechter. The name honors the German plant collector Christian Julius Wilhelm differences.

The genus Schiedeella is closely related to some species of the genus Funkiella and Microthelys. Balogh summarized the genus in 1982 very far, with many more species from different allied genera. Others, such as Garay, Szlachetko or Salazar, used a narrower species concept, which Szlachetkos scope of Schiedeella by DNA analysis is not monophyletic.
