Schilthorn
" Piz Gloria " on the Schilthorn
The Schilthorn is 2973 meters, the highest peak of the Bernese Alps, ie the Bernese Alps north upstream mountains. It has been developed from Stechelberg and Mürren by a cableway.
Situation and outlook
The Schilthorn is between the upper Lauterbrunnen valley and the upper Kiental. Its peak is, however, advanced so that it drains on all sides there against the Lauterbrunnen valley. Since the construction of the cable car to the summit is built over the mountain station and a revolving restaurant and therefore alpinistically hardly of interest. The panorama is divided into two parts as on many mountains of the Bernese Alps: In the south and beyond the Lauterbrunnen Valley dominates the main chain of the Bernese Alps; in the north and west the view is free of the numerous lower peaks of the Bernese Alps across the Jura, the Vosges and the Black Forest.
Cableway
Since 1967, several consecutive aerial cableways from Stechelberg lead into four sections to the Schilthorn:
- Stechelberg - Gimmelwald
- Gimmelwald - Murren
- Mürren - Birg
- Birg - Schilthorn
On the longest section Mürren - Birg the cable car overcomes a difference in altitude of 1039 meters. The ride from the station in Stechelberg to the summit takes 32 minutes.
The Panorama Restaurant Piz Gloria and on the slopes of the Schilthorn to April 1969 the James Bond movie turned "On Her Majesty's Secret ". Prior to the construction of the top restaurants was stalled, as the summer of 1967 ran out of money. The plan, there to make a James Bond film, should have then helped in the further financing. 125 000 U.S. dollars to the production company for the use of the building and the construction of the heliport have paid.
On December 29, 2004, one suspension cable, partial tear occurred at the lower section until 2003 renewed this track on one of the support cables used since 1965. All 53 passengers were rescued by helicopter, the operation was stopped for the necessary renewal of the ropes for weeks.
