Schioppettino

Schioppettino (synonyms: Ribolla Nera, Pocalza ) is a red variety of the grape varieties Ribolla family that is grown in the Italian region Friuli- Venezia Giulia. The same of her name derived wine is mainly produced in Prepotto and related Frazione Albana as well as some neighboring communities near the border with Slovenia. Especially the single layer Cialla at Prepotto has become known for its fine wines. The variety was first mentioned in 1282 in documents in Albana castle.

Meanwhile, the Schioppettino Vine has found its way to Australia and in the USA, albeit initially on a modest scale. John Holdredge in the Russian River Valley AVA, Sonoma County ( California ) (→ Viticulture in California ) was one of the pioneers.
