Kadsura japonica

The Sternanisgewächse ( Schisandraceae ) are a family of plants in the order of Austrobaileyales. The areas of the species range from Sri Lanka Southeast Asia to the western Malay Archipelago, and of the southeastern United States, to eastern Mexico and the Greater Antilles. One known type is the real star anise ( Illicium verum).

Description

There are woody plants: shrubs, trees and lianas. There are oil or mucous glands present. They contain essential oils. The change-constant leaves are simple, herbaceous to coriaceous and petiolate. The leaf margin is smooth or serrated. Stipules absent.

The flowers are more or less radial symmetry ( spiral ) built up spirally, not in whorls. The perianth consists of helically arranged ( five to ) twelve to many bloom cladding, in which either a gradual transition from cup to - petals can be observed or bloom all are made ​​equal. In Schisandra and Kadsura the flowers are unisexual, in Illicium hermaphrodite. In male and hermaphrodite flowers four to many fertile stamens are present. There are tricolpate pollen grains present. In female and hermaphrodite flowers free, upper permanent carpels are ( five to ) seven to 15 ( to many to 21 ) available.

There are follicles or berries formed or the fruits are interpreted as collective fleshy fruit with zweisamigigen part fruit.

System

The botanical name is derived from the Greek words: schizein for column and recognized, andros for man, male organ from, this refers to the separate counters some Schisandra species. Synonyms for Schisandraceae flower are: Illiciaceae Berchtold & Presl. and Kadsuraceae Radogizky.

The family includes three genera with about 92 species.
