Schistocyte

As fragmentocytes or schistocytes referred corrupted erythrocytes or their debris. Fragmentocytes caused by mechanical damage to the red blood cells to obstacles in the bloodstream. They are used eg in valvular heart disease, mechanical heart valves, haemolytic uraemic syndrome ( HUS), thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura ( TTP), disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC ), thrombosis, but also in the so-called Marschhämoglobinurie and some other diseases. Also a chronic doxorubicin poisoning can cause fragmentocytes.

With an increased incidence of schistocytes is called a Schistozytose or Fragmentozytose.
