Federal Political aspects

The state election was the first after the disclosure of the CDU funding scandal, and this is blamed by many that the CDU did not reach their tangible appearing after polls majority, for a change of government. The trend towards red-green and formed in October 1998 under Chancellor Gerhard Schröder red - green government seemed stopped after red-green in the state elections in 1999 already with the replacement SPD -led state governments by CDU-led in Hesse and Saarland, the majority had lost in the Bundesrat and the CDU then also captured in Thuringia absolute majority.
