Schlinge (river)

Upper reaches of the loop between Gescher and Südlohn

The sling is a 55.4 km long tributary of the Issel, which flows from the district of Borken in the Dutch Achterhoek. Because of its low gradient of the river forms many twists and turns, which lent its name to the loop.

Geography

On the German side the loop rises to a height of 53.4 m near Gescher. From there it flows through the villages and Südlohn Oeding, where it is called in Low German dialect also Möllenbääke (" mill stream "). After 13.9 km, the loop reaches the territory of the Netherlands. Here it is first referred to as the Upper- Slinge (" upper loop " ) and flows past Winterswijk, Bredevoort, Aalten and Varsseveld. Northeast of Aalten splits with the Keizersbeek a watercourse from which connects the Upper- Slinge with the Bocholt Aa referred to in the Netherlands Aa strand. In Westendorp the noose again changes its name to now continue as Bielheimerbeek their way to the mouth between Gaanderen and Doetinchem in the Dutch called on Oude IJssel Issel.

From its nearly 197 km ² catchment area accounts for 57.57 km ² on the territory of North Rhine -Westphalia.

History

Throughout its history, the life of the sling was changed several times. Originally it was a tributary of the Berkel and flowed from Winterswijk about Groenlo to its mouth near Borculo. In the Middle Ages, however, the upper reaches of today's Groenlose Slinge for reasons of flood control and drainage to the surrounding marshes was advancing in the Boven - Slinge, which was then called Aaltense Slinge redirected. From Varsseveld from it flowed as Beneden Slinge ( 'Lower loop " ) first to Doetinchem, where they led to the Oude IJssel. Later monks led the river to to drive a water mill after Gaanderen.

Bike path

A designated as slingeroute bike path near the river of Gescher about Südlohn, Oeding, Winterswijk, Aalten after Gaanderen. The slingeroute is part of a cross-border cycle route network, which also includes aa, berkel and ijsselroute belong. The cycling routes offer six tours and can be combined together.
