Stainz Castle is a former Augustinian Canons ( CanReg ) and present-day castle in Stainz in Styria, Austria. Today, the baroque castle is owned by the family of the Counts of Meran.

History

Pin Stainz

The Augustinian Canons Stainz arose when Leuthold of Wildon, then lord of Stainz, on the Schlossberg in 1229 a monastery and a small church was built. The monastery was colonized by canons from Seckau. The pin in the 16th century experienced its heyday from 1596 to 1629 under the provost Jacob Rosolenz. This reorganized the monastery and began with the expansion of the then neglected church - it was enlarged 1605-1629 and later received a Baroque interior with rich stucco decoration. At this time the main entrance of the church, who was by then on the west side between the towers has been, to the east side of the courtyard of the former monastery. Since that time, located between the towers no longer a portal, but only a plain apse with no windows or entrance. The church was in 1600, after the demolition of the former St. Jacob's Church in the market Stainz also parish church of Stainz. Further modifications and extensions of the monastery took place 1667-1683 under Dean George Jöchlinger and 1683-1704 under Propst Johann Bernhard von paumgarten. The rich stucco and fresco decoration of the church dates from the period after 1680.

The two-story built up large high altar was consecrated in 1695. Remains of the medieval system are preserved in the towers of the church and in the west wing of the Monastery building. A coat of arms grave stone of the founder of the system, Leuthold from Wildon (died 1249 ) is dated to 1448 in the time of the bicentenary of the monastery. The organ, which was restored in 1980, is one of the largest and wohlklingendsten Styria.

Under Emperor Joseph II, the Augustinian Canons was repealed in 1785. Archduke Johann, a son of Emperor Leopold II, acquired the dominion 1840. Upon his death the Stainz castle remained in the family of his descendants, the Counts of Meran.

The statue of Mary at the side entrance of the parish church at the north side in 1905 was donated by the Stainzer womanhood. She was the predecessor of the Virgin Mary statue in the main square of Stainz and was kept in the farmyard after the establishment of the new plant. Then it was placed in the church. A renovation was carried out in 2010-2011.

Current usage

In addition to living quarters of the owner located in the castle is a museum with ethnographic collections and the Styrian Hunting Museum, both of which belong to the Styrian Joanneum Universal Museum. The focus of the collection is on the peasant labor unit and the household in the country. The exhibition shows the various branches of agriculture. On 16 September 2006, also belonging to the Joanneum Hunt Museum was opened. Parts of the castle, such as the castle, the castle cellar, the arcade and the castle terrace also be rented for events.
