Schloss Veldenz

Castle Veldenz near the valley of the Moselle is a ruined castle about 1.5 kilometers southeast Veldenz, so that the word castle is somewhat misleading.

Location

The facility is located in Rhineland- Palatinate in the district Bernkastel -Wittlich. It is located on an approximately 320 meters above sea level high-altitude mountain spur and 180 above the level of the Moselle.

It is located on the slopes of the Hunsrück in a tributary of the Moselle, which is drained by the Veldenzer Bach. The town of Bernkastel- Kues located four kilometers to the northeast, the county town of Wittlich about 15 kilometers north-west and the nearest large town 31 kilometers south-west of Trier (all figures in a straight line ).

History

The first documentary mention of the castle took place in 1156 (possibly a few years earlier) instead. Frederick I ( Barbarossa ) confirmed herein a bishop Albert I of Verdun possession of the castle, together with the surrounding lands.

Since the 12th century the Counts of Veldenz lords of the lands and the castle, which was the center of the county were Veldenz. In 1286 the village of Veldenz gained town and market rights.

1444 the castle came after the extinction of Veldenzer line by inheritance to the line of Pfalz- Zweibrücken. They and their successors remained until 1694 (?) In possession of the castle and county, even if the castle was temporarily occupied during the Thirty Years' War and the Palatine War of Succession of Swedish, Spanish and French troops.

Well in 1681 the castle was destroyed. In the following years, the temporarily used as a quarry ruins changed hands many times; they belonged, among others at times to the Palatinate and Bavaria. Since 1807 she is in private hands and is now owned by the family Haufs - Brusberg.

Today

The plant was the largest castle in the Mosel valley in the 15th century. From this fact apparently explains the term " castle " is still used. At the same time this term but also serves as a distinguishing feature opposite the castle Veldenz Nohfelden.

The extensive ruins of the castle spur that was backed adaptations in the 19th century and partially rebuilt, is situated on a high and on three sides steep mountain spur. It is almost 100 meters long and up to 30 meters wide.

Itself as well as on the southern flank is a powerful bastion on the main wing to the north. The keep in the east, was not established with its distinctive stepped gables, which today is used within the managed castle as a restaurant again in contrast to the Palas.
