The Schmerach is a right tributary of the Buhler in northeastern Baden- Württemberg, whose lower course runs in the Schmerachklinge.

Geography

The source of Schmerach is in the Keuper, in the northwestern foothills of the castle hill forest, about a kilometer southeast of Eckartshausen. Initially eastward flowing, the Schmerach gradually returns in a semicircle to the left. Just a few hundred meters after its origin it leaves the forest and runs first into a straightened drainage channel at the edge of meadows by a broad, moist lowlands. After the completed bend their first four kilometers it retains for three kilometers at its now -westerly direction, it happened in the south of the small town close Ilshofen and then pours into the approximately 2 -acre reservoir Lerchensee at Lerch mill. After that, the shape of the valley changes. After it has been then drawn into wider Wiesenaue in plaster or Lettenkeuper slowly with 0.5 % slope, it cuts down from here to the mouth of 1.8 % is significantly steeper in the harsh Upper Muschelkalk one. Your valley, now a close, snare rich forest gorge with steep slopes, the Schmerachklinge, initially allowed near the stream bed formed from large limestone beds and occasional small waterfalls hard to get through. She soon turns to south-south and takes the inflows of some side blades on. In the mouth angle to a lies on top of the mountain spur the ruins of the castle rock blades, of which, however, little more than two neck trenches are still there, their greater 100 m reach length. Meanwhile, already follows a trail to the stream, soon on the shore, soon to often set and as often swept away stones him, crossing which exposes to its impact slopes rocky slopes and washes, aufschüttet in his bed gravel banks and thus displacing small tributaries. 14 km run, the Schmerach then opens shortly after they emerge from their last of the Buhler almost opposite cut its valley in the floodplain on the northern edge of sub- chief specialist of the right and east into the Buhler.

The Schmerach has a catchment area of about 36 square kilometers, the greater part of its course is left, especially well because of the lower base level of erosion in the north of the strongly competing Jagst.

The Schmerach is for the most part on the territory of the municipality Ilshofen or limited it to the city of Crailsheim ( on the upper reaches ) or the community Wolpertshausen ( on the longest part of the Schmerachklinge ).

In the field and in the vicinity of Schmerachklinge the Upper Muschelkalk is heavily karstified. So the Schmerach falls in high summer on the upper, rugged part of the blade regularly dry, her bed even offers the rare visitors here then the only way through the narrow gorge. It can be found in the area countless sinkholes and a few brook shrinkage, is one of the Lerch mill not far from the southern Talschulter located about 500 meters west of the forest, there trickles a small stream in a larger Einbruchsdoline; in a straight line of nearly one kilometer to the west from here follows the course of the ravine a number of filled partly, partly open sinkholes, whose rock walls are lost in the dark abyss.

The lower portion of Schmerachklinge, dry foot on a good forest is reached, summer often visited by visitors; a parking lot at the Talmündung offers the opportunity gladly used to go to a barbecue on a sunny meadow on the shore in a few steps.

Nature

The Schmerachklinge and the radius of the Lerch lake recently are part of the nature reserve Bühlertal between Vellberg and Geislingen with side valleys and adjacent areas. The upper Schmerach runs in front of her bow westward at Saurach by some wet meadows and riparian pieces that are under habitat protection.
