Geographical location

Schmidgaden located 17 kilometers north of Schwandorf in the Upper Palatinate region -Nord. Regensburg can be reached within 57 km. Nuremberg is 89 km away.

History

A gentleman of Schmidgaden was first mentioned in records in 1123 under the Diepoldsberg Inger Landgrave. The meaning of the name is not entirely clear; it could be derived from forge. A blacksmith would thus have been the first landlord. Schmidgaden was already in 1326 the parish, as is evident from records of the diocese of Regensburg.

In the Thirty Years' War, the population of Schmid Gadens halved. Between 1576 and 1648, four residents changed their faith. 1795/96 passed through the area during the War Coalition Austrian, French and Prussian troops. The place belonged to Rentamt Amberg and the district court Nabburg of the Electorate of Bavaria. Culture and sights

The Catholic Parish of the Assumption in Schmidgaden has evolved from an erstwhile castle chapel from the 14th century.
