Schmitt, Germany

Schmitt is a municipality in the district Cochem-Zell, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality elms and is located in the southern Eifel.

History

The place name Schmitt derives from the old Occupation blacksmith. In the period before 1750, there was a significant iron ore mining in the metropolitan area of the southern Eifel. The rivers and streams delivered while the required water power for the bellows of the forges. The forests of the Eifel provided the necessary firewood.

With the occupation of the left bank of the Rhine in 1794 by French revolutionary troops, the place was French, and in 1815 the Congress of Vienna assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia. Since 1946 it has been part of Rhineland- Palatinate then newly founded.

Parish council

The local council in Schmitt consists of six council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009 by majority vote, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Culture and sights

  • In the village center there is the 900 year old St. Maurice Church.
  • Every two years there is a tractor meeting, but to participate in the many tractor enthusiasts from Germany and neighboring Belgium and the Netherlands.
