Geography

Geographical Location

The nucleus is located in the market Schnaittach Schnaittachal, on the river of the same name, a tributary of the River Pegnitz, west of Rothenberg's on the edge of the Franconian Alb. The subsurface ( 330-400 m above sea level heights. NN ) either consists of sandstone / sand or clay or gravel slope of the Franconian Alb. In documents over 400 meters and limestone is found. Sand and clay are mined in pits around, limestone quarries. The nucleus is located west of Veldensteiner Forst and east of Nuernberg Reich Forest.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1011. There is the ruined fortress Rothenberg, a fortress of the Wittelsbach was until the integration of Central Franconia to Bavaria, " Bavaria's thorn in the flesh Nuremberg " was called over the village.

The west of Schnaittach, lying on the border with Eckental district Kirchröttenbach was 1054 Rotenbach first documented in 1500 then renamed Kirch Roettenbach. The ( then as now Catholic ) Church of St. Walburga was temporarily a church and castle in the 18th century, a popular place of pilgrimage.

The name Bell Mayrhofen ( Pelhoven ) of Great Bell Mayrhofen, which is located between Schnaittach and Kirchröttenbach, points to the courts of a certain Bello.

Religions

Until 1806 the Christian population Schnaittachs was, in contrast to the surrounding areas, predominantly Catholic. Schnaittach had a large Jewish community and soon a separate Jewish cemetery since the 15th century. Today, the former building complex of the synagogue, the Jewish Museum in Franconia ( second location in Fürth ).

Culture and sights

It is known Schnaittach by the Jewish Museum in Franconia and the important Rococo Rothenberg Fortress (built approximately 1729-1750 ). On the New Cemetery recalls since 1952 a memorial to 39 Jewish residents whose grave stones were destroyed during the Nazi dictatorship. References to the Holocaust deportees missing.
