Schnottwil is a municipality in the district of Bucheggberg the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland.

Geography

Schnottwil is located on 502 m above sea level. Level, 16 km south-west of the main town Canton Solothurn ( straight line ). The scattered village extends a scenic location on the western slope of Bucheggberg, on both sides of Illig Raven Bach, Bach a source of calibration Ibachs, in the extreme southwest of Solothurn midlands.

Population

With 1055 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Schnottwil one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Solothurn. Of the residents 95.7 % are German, 1.3 % French-speaking and 0.9 % speak Albanian (as of 2000). The population of Schnottwil amounted in 1850 to 660 inhabitants, 1900 to 633 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population has remained relatively constant in the range 600-660 inhabitants. Only since 1985 (686 inhabitants) a significant population increase was recorded.

Economy

Schnottwil was until the mid-20th century, a predominantly coined by farming village. The water power of the village Bach was formerly used for the operation of mills and an oil mill. History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1261 under the name Snotwile. Later, the names Snotenwiler ( 1264 ), Snottwil ( 1377 ) and Schnottwil ( 1398 ) published. The place name comes from the personal name Snoto and means with the local name ending in - wil as much as in the courts of the Snoto.

Since the Middle Ages Schnottwil was under the rule Buchegg, which was part of the country Comté. The monasteries Frienisberg and woman fountain had rich land in the municipality. The rule was purchased in 1391 and converted to the Bailiwick of Solothurn Bucheggberg, which was Schnottwil solothurnisch.

Until 1798, the high court was the Bernese district court Zollikofen while Schnottwil held the post as one of the four court locations in the Bailiwick. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798 ), the village belonged to the district during the Helvetic Biberist and from 1803 to the District Bucheggberg. Following several dry years, which led to food shortages, wandered around the middle of the 19th century many villagers to America.

Attractions

In the old town and some characteristic farmhouses ( half-timbered buildings ) from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved. The former school house with its bell tower at the village square dates from 1820 and was restored in 1975. The old oil mill was also restored and equipped with a new water wheel. Schnottwil does not have its own church; it belongs to the parish Oberwil in Buren. From the pre-existing chapel some ruins at the Gasthof Krone are still visible.

At the eastern edge of the village lies the nature reserve riser carrots. This quarry was used from the 15th century to the reduction of shell limestone, mainly millstones were produced.
