The Schola Cantorum in Basel to Basel was founded in 1933 by Paul Sacher ( 1906-1999 ) founded as a private " educational and research institute" early music.

Decisive influence had from the beginning of the cellist and viol player August Wenzinger (1905-1996) and the violinist and music educator Ina Lohr ( 1903-1983 ). In 1954, the Schola Cantorum was integrated into the Music Academy of Basel. In 1999, the Institute became the College of Early Music. It exercises since its foundation a strong influence on the early music movement. For the graduates of the Schola Cantorum Baroque orchestra La Cetra was founded in 1999.

In 2008, the Schola Cantorum its 75th anniversary celebrated. On this occasion, the image band Wunderkammer was Ancient Music - The Schola Cantorum with photos of AT Shepherd.

The teachers include, inter alia, the countertenor Andreas Scholl, conductor Andrea Marcon and the harpsichordist Jörg- Andreas Boetticher and Jesper Christensen Bøje.

Since 2013, Pedro Memelsdorff head of the Schola Cantorum in Basel.
