Actually, however, there are major differences between well-funded school districts where nurses are employed in all schools, and poor districts where there are often no school nurses. Many children in the U.S. have no health insurance, so the school nurse in health problems is often the first point of contact.

At primary schools fall under the jurisdiction of the school nurse also everyday non- medical services that can not be provided by the teachers for reasons of workload, such as the care of children who wet the bed or who have fallen asleep in class. At high schools, school nurses advise students, inter alia, including in matters of contraception.

School nurses are employed in public and private schools in all levels of education. Also, many private institutions, such as Day Care Centers and Preschools, employ their own nurses.

The employment conditions for a school nurse are not regulated by law. However, the National Association of School Nurses recommends as a condition of employment at least a bachelor's degree and a school nurse certificate ( School Nurse Certificate).
