Schoolcraft County, Michigan
Schoolcraft County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Manistique.
Geography
The County is located in east-central Upper Peninsula, on the south by Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of 4879 square kilometers, of which 1827 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: in Delta County, Alger County, Luce County, Mackinac County and on Lake Michigan: Charlevoix County and Leelanau County.
History
Schoolcraft County was formed in 1843 from parts of Chippewa County and Mackinac County. It was named after the explorer and ethnologist Henry Schoolcraft.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Schoolcraft County 8,903 people in 3,606 households and 2,498 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 88.67 percent White, 1.63 percent African American, 6.12 percent Native American, 0.42 percent Asian, 0.37 percent from other races; 2.80 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.93 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,606 households out of which 28.1 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.6 percent were married couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers and 30.7 percent were non-families. 27.4 percent of all households and 13.0 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.84 persons.
22.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.8 percent 18 to 24 years 26.1 percent between 25 and 44, 25.8 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 18.6 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 100.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.2 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 31,140, and the median income for a family $ 36,810. Males have a median income of $ 32,725, women $ 21,364. The per capita income was $ 17,137. 9.1 percent of families and 12.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
