Schoolcraft County, Michigan

Schoolcraft County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Manistique.

Geography

The County is located in east-central Upper Peninsula, on the south by Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of ​​4879 square kilometers, of which 1827 square miles are water. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: in Delta County, Alger County, Luce County, Mackinac County and on Lake Michigan: Charlevoix County and Leelanau County.

History

Schoolcraft County was formed in 1843 from parts of Chippewa County and Mackinac County. It was named after the explorer and ethnologist Henry Schoolcraft.
