Schreckenberg

The Terror Mountain is a 649 m high hill in the middle Erzgebirge. It is located one kilometer north-west of Annaberg -Buchholz on the boundary of the district Frohnau.

History

The collection is comprised mainly of historical significance, since the roots of Anna Berger silver ore mining. On October 28, 1491 Caspar Nietzel came near the Frohnauer upper mill on a silver gear. Then came 1496 on the opposite Sehmaufer the " Neustadt am Schreckenberg ", which soon received the name Sankt Annaberg. 1498 Annaberg received the right to mint coins for the House of Wettin. The mint was set up in or immediately at the upper mill and coined briefly especially the Schreckenberger, a widely used means of payment in the Holy Roman Empire. From this period was also probably the saying: Have a rich Anna Berger, got the sack full Schreckenberger. The construction of the large penny was in the mints Buchholz, Zwickau, Freiberg, Leipzig, Dresden and Saalfeld. The last Schreckenberger were minted in 1571 in Dresden. In Annaberg minting Schreckenberger angel penny was only until 1547.

The intense mining activity in the 15th and 16th centuries, continues to characterize the appearance of the mountain. In particular, the western flanks are determined by numerous small heaps. Between 1854 and 1856 a romanticized ruined castle was built on the Schreckenberg, which still shapes the image of the mountain. The castle tower with indicated ruin residues was financed from private funds richer Anna Berger as well as by the local organization iron Stuck & Co and built by unemployed and laborers.
