Schwaltenweiher

The Schwaltenweiher is a storage pond in the Eastern Allgäu Alps area. The lake is 14 km from the Allgäu Alps, located between the towns Seeg and rear wood. Nowadays the Schwaltenweiher is used for bathing and fish breeding.

Term

The term derives from the Schwaltenweiher built there Schwaltenmühle, which in turn derives its name from the family name Schwalt / Schwald. Earlier it was believed that the name Schwaltenweiher from the Middle High German word swellen was derived, which means as much as dam dam. However, since the name Schwalten for the near Mill and the hamlet of the same name was in use prior to impoundment of the lake, it could also be possible that the first theory of naming on the common in the Allgäu and Tirol family name is obvious.

Another early common name of the pond was agouti pond, named after lying on the west side hamlet agouti.

History

Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg was the Schwaltenweiher in 1514 to create for the purpose of fish farming and as a waterfowl hunting ground.

His nearby Castle Falkenberg ( at today's gold rabbit on the west bank ) was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War by the Imperial troops, so that it could not fall into the hands of the then approaching Sweden.

In the following centuries, the lake changed hands several times, but remained to this day in private ownership.

Leisure and Tourism

The mountains Schwaltenweiher with views of the Allgäu Alps and Tannheimer invites especially in the summer locals and tourists to enjoy the view. The Schwaltenweiher and the nearby town of Seeg are often referred because of this Alpine panorama as a " front row seat in front of the Alps". The average of four meters deep Schwaltenweiher is one of the most popular lakes in the region. Around the lake with its two islands, there is a circular route. In addition, there is the possibility to rent rowboats or play beach volleyball.
