Schwammerl

Mushroom is the term for large mushrooms in Austria and the Bavarian dialect. Swiss is called Schwämmli or Schwümm. In Vogtland dialect one speaks of sponges, in other East Franconian dialects say sponge and in the Thuringian and Upper Saxon dialects Schwämmel.

This should be understood not all fungi in the biological sense, but the fruit body of edible mushroom species (see Mushroom ) and their inedible or poisonous relatives (see Toadstool ). By way of example, the name chanterelle is for " damn ".

The underlying word comes from Old High German sponge swamp, Old English swamm meaning " mushroom, sea sponge " and is related to swamp and Greek somphós ( " spongy, porous" ).

In High German, it has been displaced in the first meaning, except for the dry rot by the boletus resulting from the Latin fungus. In Bavarian, it has survived in the diminutive as mushrooms, in Alemannic umlaut ä or ü sound shift.

• " Mushroom " was also the nickname of the composer Franz Schubert.
• Under the name of Rudolf Hans Bartsch 1911 Mushroom wrote a novel, freely took Schubert's life as a model and was the Dreimaederlhaus by Heinrich Berté as a template for the operetta.
• The Schwammerlkönig is the title of a television series created in 1988 by the Bavarian Radio.
