Schwanengesang

The Swan Song (D 957 ) is a collection of songs of the composer Franz Schubert ( 1797-1828 ). The songs were written from August to October 1828th Factory compilation includes music poems by Ludwig Rellstab, Heinrich Heine and Johann Gabriel Seidl of one. Since it is Schubert's last major composition, and earned posthumously published collection subsequently the name swan song, traditionally the name given to the last work of an artist.

This collection was compiled a year after Schubert's death by his publisher Haslinger. Since the 13 songs are immediately written down one after the other in the autograph, there is much evidence that Schubert had actually conceived as a continuous cycle. On the other hand, Schubert had the six Heine songs another publisher offered to publish separately, so you can at least be regarded as independent groups within the collection, the Rellstab and the Heine songs well.

Certainly not conceived as belonging to the collection had Schubert 's song " Pigeon Post " on a text by Johann Gabriel Seidl, which was added by Haslinger arbitrarily and in the cycle represents a certain foreign body.
