The Stone Sweden (420 m) is a mountain in the Western Lusatia. He is regarded as the local mountain community Steina in Pulsnitz. Built in 1898, The observation tower offers a good panoramic view.

Location

The Swedish monument is located in the western Upper Lusatia in Saxony, just a few hundred meters south of Steina. Other towns nearby are Ohorn in the south and in the west Pulsnitz.

Geology

On the Sweden rock hit several different rocks together. On the eastern slope is found granodiorite and on the western slope Zweiglimmergranodiorit, while the peak areas consist of greywacke. The greywacke originated as a sediment of a primordial ocean, which covered the Upper Lusatia before 600 to 800 million years ago. These sediments cemented gradually, similar to the sandstone.

History

The mountain it's first mentioned in writing in 1754 as Gückelsberg. On field maps from the 1835 's the name Gickelsberg. This name comes in Upper Lusatia before several times. Gickeln is synonymous with watching or ausschauen.

The current name of the mountain is due to a historical error. Since a ceremony to commemorate the anniversary of the death of the Swedish king Gustav Adolf in 1832, which was 200 years before the Thirty Years War at the Battle of Lutzen, called the Mountain Stone Sweden, although Gustav Adolf never dwelt on the mountain. An inscription on a summit boulder with the words Gustavus Adolphus Rex 1632 is probably due to a rather enthusiastic nature. Nevertheless, in 1706 Swedish troops held on in the area, of which one or the other legend has to report. Among other things, near the summit Swedish gold have been found, which should come from the Swedish troops, encamped here.

Some boulders on the summit called Sweden stones. Another legend says they were the remains of a large stone table with standing in front of stone stools.

A stone bears the engraved names of known Oberlausitzer:

  • Ziegenbalg ( missionary to India)
  • Rietschel (sculptor )
  • Lessing ( poet )
  • Spruce ( philosopher)
  • Kühn (founder of the first German Agricultural Institute )

Middle of the 19th century the stream of visitors grew to the mountain, but the view from the top by groups of trees and forest was limited. 1898 was a year earlier, founded in mountain and Improvement Society of Pulsnitz build a 14 -meter high observation tower. 1902 had the mountaintop a paved road and a simple accommodation facility, which was enlarged in 1909 to a simple restaurant. 1967 opened today's mountain restaurant.
