Schweipolt Fiol

Schweipolt Fiol (also Sweipolt Fiol, Sebald Vehl or Veyl; * 1479, † 1525 or 1526) from Franconia in Bavaria was a pioneer of the printing craft in Eastern Europe in the 15th century.

1491 printed Fiol in Krakow, the first book in Cyrillic at all, the Oktoich (Russian: Октоих, from Greek: Ὀκτώηχος ( Oktoechos ) ), a liturgical book of the Orthodox Church. The best preserved specimen of seven still existing, once owned by the Wroclaw reformer Johann Hess (1490-1547), is located in the Russian State Library.

" Schweipolt Fiol " is a corruption of his German family name Sebald Vehl, probably due to the in Eastern Europe ( linguistically ) less common strain.
