Schweizer's reagent

Schweizer's reagent ( after the chemist Eduard Mathias Schweizer, 1818-1860, professor in Zurich ) is an ammoniacal solution of copper sulfate ( tetrammine copper (II ) hydroxide ) with the chemical formula [Cu (NH3 ) 4] (OH) 2 · 3H2O. It is used for production of cuprammonium rayon, wherein the compound to a cellulose slurry ( Amminkupfer (II) cellulosat ) is dissolved and then precipitated again by addition of acid.

Production

Schweizer's reagent is prepared by the treatment of copper chips having a 20 % ammonia solution, which contains some ammonium chloride ( NH4Cl), and air blowing. Manufacture is also achieved by dissolving copper ( II) hydroxide (Cu (OH) 2), or basic copper ( II) sulfate ( CuSO4 · 3 Cu ( OH2 ) ) in aqueous ammonia.
