Schweizer Aircraft

The Schweizer Aircraft Corporation is a U.S. company in Horseheads ( in Elmira ), New York, at the Elmira / Corning Regional Airport ( ICAO: KELM ), the first gliders, however, now produces helicopters and manned and unmanned reconnaissance aircraft.

History

The company was founded in 1930 as a Swiss Metal Aircraft Company by brothers Ernie, Paul A. and William Schweizer.

Gliders

The first glider SGP 1-1 in 1930 had its first successful flight. In December 1939, the company moved to Elmira, New York and was called Schweizer Aircraft Corporation. From 1942 the company produced the glider TG -2 as training aircraft for the U.S. Army in large numbers. After the Second World War, however, the company aircraft parts for Sikorsky, Grumman and other companies also produced further gliders such as the SGU 2-22 and SGS 1-35. In 1984 Swiss was to develop the SGM 2-37 motor glider the contract for USAF.

Helicopter

Since 1983, the company manufactures under license the Hughes Aircraft Helicopter Models 269/300C. In 2004 Swiss was purchased by the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, which offers, for example, the first flight launched on 18 December 2008 successor to the Swiss S -333 now as Sikorsky S- 434. It is known especially the training helicopter Schweizer 300C.

Together with Northrop Grumman MQ -8 UAV is developed which is based on the S -333. Furthermore, working with the development of the Sikorsky Sikorsky X2.

The Schweizer Aircraft Corporation was incorporated in February 2009 in the Sikorsky Global Helicopters group.
