Schweyen

Schweyen is a commune of 313 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the northern Vosges in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region.

Geography

Schweyen is at the northern Lorraine, just 1.5 km from the border crossing at Hornbach, along the road D 351 from Bitche to Zweibrücken.

History

Gallo -Roman testimonies indicate colonization in the 2nd century.

A first mention of the village was carried out as welding ( MHG herd of cattle ) in the year 1322. The place belonged at this time to the county of Hanau - Lichtenberg. After centuries of disputes over the control of the place Schweyen was awarded in the Treaty of 1606 finally Lorraine.

Already in 1569, Messrs of Hanau- Lichtenberg to the Protestant faith over and thus Schweyen was Protestant. Later again Catholic majority Schweyen was ecclesiastically to 1899 Loutzviller assigned since Volmunster is responsible.

Schweyen belonged from 1790 to 1801 for the defunct Canton Breidenbach and since then the Canton Volmunster. From 1802 to 1866 formed Schweyen with Loutzviller administrative matters. During World War II Schweyen was evacuated and almost completely destroyed.
