Sciacarello

Sciaccarello is an ancient red wine grape that is grown on the French island of Corsica, especially to Sartène and Ajaccio on an area of approximately 783 hectares (2007, ONIVINS, ). Presumably they existed at the time of the Romans and it is believed that it was imported from Italy.

The late-ripening vine produces fruity, not very dark red wines and rosés, which are characterized by an herbal, peppery bouquet. Connoisseurs recognize the wine aromas of almonds, coffee and raspberry.

It is often blended with the tannin-rich variety Nielluccio ( so called in Corsica the Sangiovese grape ). In France, the 6 clones 744, 834, 835, 874, 875, 907, 930 and 961 are approved for cultivation of quality wines. Clone 744 is the most common in cultivation.
