Scio is a town in Allegany County, New York in the United States. In the 2000 census, the village had 1914 inhabitants.

History

The site was first settled around 1805 by Joseph Knight, a Minutemen in the American Revolution; Knights Creek, which flows near Scio in the Genesee River named after him. The city was founded in 1823 by removal from the Town Angelica. Part of the area led later separated in the formal establishment of the cities Amity ( 1830), Wellsville (1855 ) and Willing ( 1851).

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 91.3 km ², of which 0.09% or 0.1 km ² water surface.

The Town is located in the southern half of Allegany County, north of the Village Wellsville.

The Genesee River flows through the city north and the two tributaries Knight Creek and Vandermark Creek lead here.

New York State Route 19 is a north-south highway that runs through the city. Scio is also located on the main line of the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad.

Demography

At the time of the census of 2000, lived in the city in 1914 people. The population density was 21 people per km ². There were 894 housing units at an average 9.8 per km ².
