Sclerotium

A sclerotium (Greek σκληρός skleros "hard" ) is a occurring in fungi hardened permanent mold. It is characterized by a densely interwoven mycelial mass and strength that withstands drought and cold. The fungus can persist a long time in this idle state and begins to grow again only when conditions are favorable. Examples of fungi that form sclerotia, ergot ( Claviceps purpurea), the sclerotia - Polypore ( Polyporus tuberaster ), the Mexican bald ( Psilocybe mexicana ), Sclerotium delphinii and many types of named after the family of Sklerotienbecherlingsverwandten are ( Sclerotiniaceae ).
