Scope (project management)

The content and scope management (including scope management ) as part of project management is designed to ensure that exactly the tasks are carried out in the project that are required for successful completion.

This includes the one hand, planning and verification that nothing has been forgotten on the other side but to no unnecessary work is performed. It is important to mention that in the project context, the term content and scope can stand both for the project ( What to do? ), As well as for the ( end) product ( What is being done by the project? ). The result types for the project ( eg analysis document, design document) are available for all projects in the same category (eg IT ) projects similar. The desired product properties are different for all products.

The PMBOK Guide sees this before five main processes:

Initiation

Authorization / start of a project or the next phase of the project.

Planning of the content and scope

Preparation of a written Project Scope Description (Scope Statement) as a basis for project decision. In many companies, the content and scope description part of the project application process.

Definition of the content and scope

Subdivision in result types. These small, manageable units for the description of the content and scope are the basis for future effort estimation and planning processes.

Verification of the content and scope

The verification verifies the completeness, correctness, consistency, ... of the defined content and scope. The test is completed by the formal acceptance by the customer.

Change control of the content and scope

The change control checks whether unauthorized changes ( and only these) have been implemented correctly.
