Turbot ( Psetta maxima)

The turbot ( Scophthalmidae ) are a family of flatfish ( Pleuronectiformes ). All species except for a life in the northeastern Atlantic, the Baltic, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Only Scophthalmus aquosus lives in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean from Florida to Newfoundland.

Features

The eyes are on the left side of the body. The dorsal fin begins above the upper eye, the bases of the pelvic fins are of equal length on both sides. The lateral line runs in a wide arc over the pectoral fins. Turbot are predators that have a flatfish relatively large mouth with a massive lower jaw. The largest species, the turbot ( Psetta maxima) is one meter long. The other species reach lengths of 12-75 centimeters.

Turbot are fished commercially.
