Scott Fischer

Scott Fischer ( born December 24, 1956May 11, 1996 on Mount Everest ) was an American mountaineer and entrepreneur, and the first American, who ascended the 8,516 m Lhotse, the fourth highest mountain in the world.

With his company " Mountain Madness" it was in 1994 entered the scene of the paid mountain guide for extreme tours, after he had previously procured a reputation in the mountaineering scene by daring tours in high mountains and ascents in extreme conditions.

With his company he joined in competition with the established New Zealand Mountain Guides entrepreneur Rob Hall, who was a personal friend with him. On his first expedition, he initiated an environmental protection program that was collecting from the heights of Mount Everest more than 2,500 pounds of trash and brought them to the valley. In particular, the South Col at 8,000 meters altitude above was a gigantic dump of torn tents and empty oxygen bottles. Scott Fischer had a considerable share of it to get the Everest again noticeably cleaner.

Before the 1996 expedition Scott Fischer once stood at the summit of Everest. In the pre-monsoon period in 1996 besieged eleven expeditions the south side of Mount Everest, the two largest of these expeditions by Rob Hall and Scott Fischer. Up to secure the path to the South Col no major incidents were reported. With a small crew of customers and Sherpas broke in the night of 9 to 10 May 1996, a total of 21 persons from the South Col to the "Summit attack" on, among them Scott Fischer and by him for this company specially hired Russian mountain guide Anatoli Nikolayevich Bukrejew. After mitternächtlichem departure reached to 13.10 clock the first climbers to the summit of Mount Everest. Previously, an agreement of both teams had failed, which Sherpas should back up the final climb over the so-called Hillary Step, a 12 meter high steep step in the final summit ridge, with fixed ropes, so that considerable forces were wasted to defuse this last obstacle on the Südanstieg.

The normally extremely important agreed last reversal time of 13 or 14 clock, it was at the top, or was it before the summit to more safely reach the last high camp on the way back, had long since passed, as Scott Fischer to one of its customers under last summit -goers of May 10 was. At this time already raging just below the summit a snow storm with wind speeds of over 120 km / h the very weakened the returnees, auskühlte and brought to the edge of her powers. Half way back to a height of about 8,400 m in the so-called " balcony " failed Scott Fischer's forces. His entire team had managed the descent, with the exception of the boss. Some fishermen Team members and other climbers expeditions spent an extreme night away from the camp at the South Col, because of the snow storm without a way to find the camp. However, all members of Fischer's expedition at night were recovered on 11 May by Anatoly Bukrejew.

Fischer, was found alive on the afternoon of the next day after 24 hours under extreme cold conditions of Sherpas. Accompanying him was a participant of another expedition, which could be saved. Fischer, however, was too weak and because of frostbite unable to walk, or to otherwise secure. He died on the same day.

Everest purchased at auction on the southern route must pass through his body: it lies at an altitude of about 8,300 m below the so-called " balcony ". In May 2010, the corpse should be salvaged, but the family refused fisherman in advance their consent.

Scott Fischer was married to the professional pilot Jean Price.
