Propanoyl -CoA acyltransferase (also sterol carrier protein (SCP), nonspecific lipid transfer protein ) is the enzyme in animals and fungi, that catalyzes the biosynthesis of Choloyl -CoA, a precursor of cholic acid ( a bile acid). It is localized in the cytosol and mitochondria of peroxisomes. For the peroxisome import it binds to PEX5. Human SCP is produced mainly in the liver, fibroblasts, and placenta. In Zellweger syndrome SCP activity is lowered due to a lack of peroxisomes.
