Scroll (music)

The screw (see volute ) with string instruments concludes the instrument neck above the peg box.

This is primarily for the ornament and has its light weight only little influence on the timbre of the instrument. In many cases it is (especially with viols ) replaced with a carved human or animal head (Lion, Dragon, etc.). The accuracy of the screw with respect to the axis of symmetry to the neck are often already shed light on the quality of the instrument.

In older instruments before 1820 the original screw was, as the neck was replaced for game reasons for a more modern and about one centimeter lengthened variant, again used to obtain the characteristcs of the original luthier.
