Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista

The Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista was one of the six major brotherhoods in the Republic of Venice.

History

The Scuola was founded in 1261, initially located at Sant'Aponal in Sestriere San Polo. 1307 was the relocation to San Giovanni Evangelista north of the Frari Church. The school was disbanded in 1806, but rebuilt in the sequence and still exists.

Building

The building of the Scuola were rebuilt around 1480 in the style of the early Venetian Renaissance. During this time the small courtyard ( Campiello ) was born. Its walls have a fluted pilasters. The entrance is decorated with a well Mauro Codussi ( other suspect Pietro Lombardo ) designed portal, which is topped by a bezel. From Codussi also leading to a podium two flights of stairs and the hall have been created on the ground floor with two rows of columns and the " Ghibellinenfenster ". The platform above the stairs is crowned by a dome.

Located behind the assembly hall oratory upstairs had a Gentile Bellini, Vittore Carpaccio, Lazarro Bastiani, Giovanni Mansueti and Benedetto Diana created series of paintings with the wonders of cross relic, which is now in the Accademia. The reliquary itself is still in the possession of the Society, is issued in a version by the end of the 14th century on the altar.
