Scutellum (insect anatomy)

The term scutellum (variant of Latin scutulum " small shield ", diminutive of scutum " long plate " ) or labels referred to in the biology of different things:

  • In insects a mostly triangular and strongly hardened ( sclerotized ) part of the middle segment of the thorax ( mesothorax ). It is part of the Notums. The scutellum is in beetles ( Coleoptera) and bugs (Heteroptera ) most clearly as an inserted between the elytra wedge visible. When the shield bugs ( Scutelleridae ) it covers even the entire abdomen. Also in Hymenoptera ( Hymenoptera) the scutellum is almost always visible, but sometimes consists of several parts.
  • At the grass fruit ( caryopsis ) of grasses, a shield -like suction device, which has its origin in the cotyledon sheath. It serves to provide the embryo with the nutrients present in the endosperm.
