Scutosaurus

Scutosaurus, live reconstruction

  • Russia

Scutosaurus (Greek: "shield lizard" ) was a genus of Pareiasaurier whose fossils were found in the Upper Permian of Russia.

He reached a length of about two meters, as other Pareiasaurier he had a massive bone structure and short, thick legs. The also typical for Pareiasaurier Schädelornamentierungen were well trained, including coarse ridges on the bone surface. The body was of osteoderms ( bony plates ) covered in loose transverse rows. From the construction of the teeth can be concluded that it was herbivorous.

A certain level of recognition achieved Scutosaurus for his appearances in the documentary " The ancestors of the dinosaurs " and the series " Primeval - Return of the prehistoric monsters ".
