Sea foam

The spray ( technical terminology also: the spray ) is the whitish mixture of water and air, which is created when the water natural or artificial waters churned by mechanical action. Such mechanical effects can be:

  • The screw or the bow of a boat or ship
  • Fall from height (eg a waterfall )
  • The rapid flow of water against obstacles (eg rapids or on a rocky coast )

Mostly it is a combination of several of these effects.

Spray occurs on depending on the strength of the mechanical action in various forms. These range from foam to a fine spray.

The extent of occurrence of spray at wave crests ( whitecaps ) can be used to determine wind speed.

An increased number of microorganisms in the water, spray can settle to the beach as algae foam.

With Bubbles by added water (eg rivers ) is called Gischtwasser. Because of the low specific weight of this water is no longer wearing swimmers and therefore poses a particular danger

In the production of alcohol fermenting foam is referred to as spray or Gäscht.
